Today we will consider implications of Christian love. John 21:18-23
When we confess our love to Jesus, it is a willing choice without any constraint or compulsion. Whatever is done on other’s insistence removes the volitional thrill of a meaningful decision made out of full love for God. Christianity is a personal commitment to Christ and not a religious ceremony. True love is a commitment and faces any adversity without any variation. In the case of Peter, love based personal drive and enthusiasm failed, for lack of serious commitment.
Jesus led Peter through an intense scrutiny and self-evaluation. He could not get away with a simple “I love you” statement. We hear numerous frivolous assertions of love in the pop culture. It takes away the meaning of true love.
Jesus wants us to be sincere about our statement of love. Agape question has to be answered in the same magnitude. Peter answered with a “phileo” and that precipitated the follow up question.
1. Then our responsibility begins with feeding the lambs. Provide nurture and support for the little ones and enable them to grow in the grace of Jesus. It is a serious matter because Jesus asserted that these are His lambs. Ownership is with Jesus, caring responsibility is with the church.
2. Second mission of the church is to care for the mature members of His family. As children, adults also need to receive support and care in their growth. Church must make sure that adults receive care.
3Third mission is to feed Jesus’ sheep. The people of God need guidance and direction in their walk with Jesus, and the church has responsibility to be the agency of God to provide the spiritual food. It is required of us to be available to offer wise counsel, proper administration and effective stewardship so that mature people of God will receive the intelligently designed spiritual paradigm.
Are we ready to take up the responsibility that accompanies committed love to Jesus? Love binds the whole family of God. There is no stronger force on earth than true love.
